European History And Literature

Credit: 1 English, 1 Social Studies
Open to Grade: 12
2 consecutive periods
 
This course is an integrated survey of western European history and literature from 1200 AD to the modern era.  Making extensive use of the Internet and other multimedia, students will be ecouraged to experience history and literature through performance - and project - based activities.  Students will develop skills in reserarch, oral and written communications, problem solving, cooperation and creativity.

2008 "Games-N-Roses" The Wars of the Roses revisited
       (53 Students) Thursday May 15th (6-9 pm), 16th (during school) CSC.
The Wars of the Roses (15th Century England) was revisted through five seperate scenes showcasing contemplary gameshows. The struggle between the Lancaster branch (Red Rose) and the York branch (White Rose) of the Plantaganet family tree took center stage. Jerry Springer, Family Feud, Deal or No Deal, Survivor, and Jeopardy were all used to mock the struggle.

2007 "Lawless & DisOrder" Trials That Should Have Been
          (60 Students) Thursday May 17th (6-9 pm), 18th (during school) in CSC.
A satirical setting played host to three historic figures brought to trial for crimes against society. England's Queen Elizabeth was tried for not providing an heir to the throne. Italy's Leonardo Da' Vinci was tried for desecration of the human bodies by performing autopsies without the Pope's permission. Germany's Martin Luther was accused of defacing the doors of the Wittenberg church with his 95 Thesis posting. Other famous historical figures included, (Luther trial) Henry VIII, John Knox, Pope X, (Elizabeth I trial) Robert Dudley, William Shakespeare, Mary Stuart (Da Vinci trial) Tycho Brahe, Galileo Galilei, Niccolo Machiavelli, Pope Leo X..again. Periodic appearances were made by Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Guy Fawkes, Joan of Arc, Madame Defarge, and Vlad the Impaler.

2006 The Renaissance World's Fair
         (77 Students) Thursday May 18th (6-9 pm), 19th (during school) in CSC.
Students displayed a World's Fair set during the period known as the Renaissance. Using both rooms of the CSC along with the court yard and grass next to the parking, students displayed many aspects of the time. Demonstration or performances included; Tarot card reading, tavern and food stands, games of chance, card games, apothecary shop, Galileo scientific experiments, jewelry / satchel making, printing press demonstrations, pottery shop, international art shop, Albrecht Durer shop, El Escorial model, inquisition torture chamber, relic peddlers, mask peddlers, juggling / diablo, Renaissance troubadours and the sale of indulgences.

2005 The Victorian Ball
             (39 Students) Wednesday May 11th (6-9 pm), & the last dance at the Prom.
Ladies with dance cards in hand awaited gentlemen to escort them from seat to dance to punch bowl. Students and invited guests were treated to student performed and guest participated Victorian dances. A live band and dance caller set the mood as people of all ages were transported back in time. Snacks were provided while students performed vocal ballads during a break in the stepping.
 
2004 An Evening of Shakespeare
     (44 Students) Friday April 30th (6-9 pm) in the Center for Student Creativity.
Five scenes from five seperate Shakespearean plays were recited by the students. The scenes were taken from As You Like It, Henry V, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Macbeth. The students created the sets, memorized the lines, constructed the props (swords & stainglass window), prepared and served the food and finally performed the show. An intermission played host to a musical performance by some of the students accompanied by Mr. Mark Toure (music) and his piano.

2003 The Madrigal Dinner
        Tuesday April 1st (Evening), 2nd for the Jr. High during school
The King invited a few worthy guests to the castle for dinner and entertainment. The meal, chicken with fixings,  was eaten without utensils while noblemen and ladies interacted within the confines of the royal court. Juggling, bear wrestling, and a puppet show highlighted the evenings entertainment.
